Team Canada was defeated by a superior Team U.S.A. 7-1 at the 2008 Bandy World Championship today in Moscow. The win means Team U.S.A. captures first place in the B-Pool and will play the lowest placed team in the A-Pool on Sunday morning in a relegation match to decide which team plays in the A-Pool next year.
Canada's next and final game will be a playoff game for 2nd place in the B-Pool versus either Latvia or Estonia, both of whom Canada defeated earlier in the week. This game will take place at 10:00pm Moscow time on Saturday Feb. 2nd at the Olympic Sports Centre in Moscow.
Team U.S.A. was faster and stronger than Team Canada and when Canada was forced to take penalties, Team U.S.A. began to build their lead. Canada's lone goal was scored by Jason Neufeld on a penalty stroke.
Additional Notes:
1. Canada is in the "B" pool with Holland, USA, Mongolia, Estonia, Latvia and Hungary.
2. The "A" Pool is made up of Russia, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Kazakstan and Belarus.
3. Canada finished 2nd to the U.S.A. in the B-Pool World Championships in Stockholm in 2006.
4. Team Canada is based out of the Sturgeon Creek Community Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
5. Russia is a bandy power and, now, having won the rights to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, it is pushing hard to have bandy added as an official Winter Olympics sport.
